Thousands of parade-goers line up on Woodward Avenue before the sun comes up, in unpredictable weather, for colorfully crafted floats, spirited marching bands, celebrity appearances and high-flying, gigantic character balloons you can see coming from a mile away. The day’s festivities begin with the Turkey Trot, a series of fun races a mile, 5K and 10K long, where runners suit up in nearly every costume you could imagine, including, of course, turkey getups.
Recognized as one of the best Thanksgiving parades in the country by U.S. News & World Report Travel, America's Thanksgiving Parade presented by Art Van is celebrating its 91st anniversary. Talk about tradition! The iconic parade will feature celebrities, new floats designed and built by The Parade Company, larger-than-life balloons, marching bands and specialty groups like the Distinguished Clown Corps and Big Head Corps. The race takes place along downtown's historic Woodward Avenue. The 3-mile long parade begins at Kirby Street and Woodward Avenue, adjacent to the Detroit Institute for Arts and ends at Congress Street south of Campus Martius Park.
