School Bell Series: John Vander Burgh: Zeeland’s Stained Glass Artist
Contact
Stained glass has long played an important role in the churches and communities of West Michigan, telling stories through color, light, and design. In the mid twentieth century, Zeeland’s stained-glass inventory grew considerably when Dutch immigrant and stained-glass artist John Vander Burgh settled in Zeeland. Join local historian Linda Kolk for a presentation exploring the ways this acclaimed artist added to the beauty that Zeeland’s residents continue to enjoy today.
Drawing on research completed for the Association for the Advancement of Dutch American Studies, Kolk will highlight the work of Vander Burgh in local churches, in civic buildings, and in homes. Those who attend will get a taste of what they might see on the church tour, sponsored by the Zeeland Historical Society, in September. The presentation will also explore why Vander Burgh, a gifted artist who could have found work anywhere in the world, chose to live in Zeeland.
Whether you are interested in local history, immigration stories, art, or the stories behind much of the stained glass in Zeeland, this presentation offers a unique opportunity to discover and appreciate a treasured part of our community's heritage.
