Michigan is home to rich history and incredible stories from freedom seekers and those who aided them during their journey along the Underground Railroad.

Hosted by the Michigan Freedom Trail Commission, this events celebrates the significance of International Underground Railroad Month with educational programs from dynamic speakers that bring the past to life. 

From the shores of Lake Michigan to the heart of downtown Detroit, dive into an interactive map to experience a virtual tour (and plan your road trip) of historical sites and markers for the Underground Railroad across Michigan. 

Michigan was one of the final stops for freedom seekers traveling the Underground Railroad, also known as the "Freedom Trail". 

This was not a physical railroad, but a diverse network of people, safe places and communities helping people flee enslavement. Uncover the storied history of Detroit – which was often the last stop along the Underground Railroad before crossing to Canada – as well as a variety of cities across southern Michigan like Battle Creek, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor.
