Dougherty Old Mission House
Step Back to 1842 to 1917. Explore the Dougherty Old Mission House built by Rev. Peter Dougherty, Chief Agosa and the Odawa and Ojibwe in the wilderness. The Mission was founded as a result of the Treaty of 1836 which enabled Michigan statehood. Community members have restored the house with an indoor restroom, summer kitchen, carriage shed, ice house and unique outhouse. Your docent will introduce you to its rich history including years as a Presbyterian Mission House, farm where the region's fruit industry began, an inn and summer home. Features include a glass construction viewing port, Maria Dougherty's spinning wheel, cistern in the summer kitchen, Rushmore family pieces and changing visiting exhibits. Learn about its ties to the Mission Point Lighthouse. See the demonstration garden before hiking trails on the 15 acres or enjoy the day from the porch. View unusual pure American chestnut trees. Bus and group tours welcome. Experience the National Register of Historic Places site that gave Old Mission Peninsula its name in the village of Old Mission, 17 miles north of Traverse City.
