The Mertz Grade Trail is a 2.5-mile trail loop that follows an abandoned railroad area and travels through second-growth lowland and mixed forests thick with low-growing plants and excellent cover for wildlife. In the spring and summer, visitors will have the opportunity to see a bounty of wildflowers and blueberries along this pathway. In the winter months, this trail sees the most wildlife activity. Snowshoe hare, ruffed grouse, fox, bobcat and white-tailed deer tracks are abundant. The trail can be accessed from the parking lot near the park headquarters and is open to hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but the trail is not groomed. It will take visitors to the Memorial Building, a historic structure located near the picnic area that was built in the 1930s in memory of Edward Hartwick, and also connects to the Old Growth Forest Trail and Au Sable River Trail, offering the opportunity for a longer hike.
