The North Central State Trail extends for 62 miles and connects Gaylord to Mackinaw City, Michigan. The trail is primarily made up of crushed limestone and asphalt and allows for hiking, biking and horseback riding year-round. However, visitors should be aware that the trail does allow snowmobiles during the winter months. The flat terrain makes it perfect for long bike rides.
The trail is often separated into the following sections:
- Gaylord to Vanderbilt (7.6 miles): Trailhead at the Gaylord Youth Soccer Complex
- Vanderbilt to Wolverine (10.9 miles): Trailhead along E Main Street
- Wolverine to Indian River (9.6 miles): The Village has two parks between the trail and the Sturgeon River with trailheads
- Indian River to Topinabee (5.6 miles): Trailhead at Indian Totem adjacent to Chamber of Commerce
- Topinabee to Cheboygan (11.9 miles): Trailhead at the Topinabee Park on the east side of US-27
- Cheboygan to Mackinaw City (16.3 miles): The Cheboygan trailhead is located between Lincoln Avenue and Taylor Streets just east of Western Avenue. The Mackinaw City trailhead is located at Mackinaw Crossings Drive just east of Nicolet Street
