Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute (SBWI) is an accredited, nonprofit woodworking and carpentry trade school in Adrian, Michigan. Located in Southeast Michigan’s Lenawee County, SBWI has become an international destination for hands-on craftsmanship, bringing accomplished instructors and students from across the United States and around the world to learn, teach and create together.
SBWI offers weeklong intensive and weekend classes in furniture making, timber framing, woodturning, carving, joinery, chairmaking, historic preservation and other specialized crafts. Beginners, hobbyists, artists, craftspeople and trade professionals learn directly from experienced makers in fully equipped workshops. Students build real projects while developing practical skills and a deeper understanding of traditional and modern craftsmanship. Classes require no previous woodworking experience.
SBWI also provides immersive, full-time career training. Its established Furniture Design program combines fine woodworking, furniture construction, creative design and career preparation. Beginning in fall 2027, SBWI will expand its career offerings with full-time Timber Framing and Architectural Carpentry & Preservation programs.
