The first and present courthouse was constructed in 1887 to 1888. It had some renovations in 1915 and a new addition in 1974. The red colored rock for the courthouse was quarried from a mountainside a half mile away. Originally built with a steeple and four gargoyles, the gargoyles and the steeple have since been removed in the 1940's as pieces of the sandstone were falling and endangering guests. Like many other municipal buildings in the 1950s and '60s the Gogebic County Courthouse was designated as a fallout shelter in the event of nuclear attack or other disaster.
The weathered fallout placard can still be found on the exterior of the courthouse facing Moore St. The courthouse is registered as a historical building. To find out more history about the courthouse you can visit BessemerHistory.org.
