Since 1924, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts has served as a champion of groundbreaking visual art and cultural advancement for both the regional community and visitors from around the world. With a mission to cultivate the creation and appreciation of the visual arts in West Michigan the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA), along with the Kirk Newman Art school, is committed to the belief that Art is for everyone. The KIA’s dynamic collection reflects the electrifying and powerful ability for artists to challenge and innovate while giving voice to the rich and varied histories of people that make American art compelling.
The museum's ten galleries showcase outstanding temporary exhibitions and an exceptional and diverse permanent collection of nearly 5,000 works by local, national and international artists with nearly half of its works on view by women and artists of color.
The Kirk Newman Art Schools, within the KIA, is a community-based, non-degree art school offering classes for children through adults year-round in four terms. Mediums offered include photography, digital media, design, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, painting and drawing, printmaking, fiber, glass fusing, foreign language, creative writing, and wellness.
