The Shingle Mill Pathway is a multi-use trail that winds along the Pigeon River and is composed of 5 loops ranging from 3/4 miles to 11 miles. While hiking, you can spend the night at one of several dispersed campsites along the route, as the 10 and 11-mile loops can take around 6 to 7 hours to complete. In the summer, hikers and mountain bikers share the trail. Come November, deer hunters will be scattered throughout the trail and when the snow falls, the trails will become populated with cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
The trail can be accessed at the Pigeon Bridge State Forest Campground and winds through the most scenic areas of the Pigeon River Country State Forest. There is a parking lot across the road from the campground for day-use visitors. The trailhead is located 10 miles east of Vanderbilt via East Sturgeon Valley Road.
Be sure to visit the Pigeon River Country State Forest Discovery Center to learn more about the areas amazing natural resources. The center is run by the Pigeon River Country Association.
