Geocaching in Michigan: Treasure Hunting with a Modern Twist
Unleash your inner Indiana Jones in the wilds of Michigan on a geocaching expedition. Combining the thrill of a treasure hunt with the exhilaration of exploring the outdoors, geocaching is more than a hobby – it’s an intentional way to dig deeper into Michigan’s most beautiful natural sites.
Strategically hidden outdoors are weatherproof containers, or caches. Inside the box you’ll usually find a logbook, a pen or pencil, and a small item like a special coin or a toy. Once the geocache is hidden, the GPS coordinates are posted on Geocaching.com or the Geocaching® app. Set out on your own time, go at your own pace and see what you can find! Caches can be found almost anywhere – like inside a hollow tree stump, under rocks, by a Little Free Library or inside a mural! The cache might be tucked away or hidden in plain sight – or may even involve solving a puzzle to find it.
Once you discover the treasure, you’re expected to sign the logbook, take a prize if there is one and leave something of equal or greater value. Then, you leave the geocache where you found it and move on to the next adventure.
With its 103 state parks and recreation areas, along with countless other natural attractions, Michigan was practically made for geocaching. The Michigan Geocaching Organization (MiGo) has a series of challenges for geocachers and a leaderboard to show your progress. Look for themed “trails” that celebrate Michigan’s heritage like the Kirtland's Warbler GeoTrail that loops through central Northern Michigan and abandoned railroad trails in Newaygo County.

In any corner of Michigan that you visit, secret treasures abound. Hike a section of the Upper Peninsula’s North Country Trail that’s loaded with geocaches along its 1,180 miles. Within the 3.8 square miles of Mackinac Island, there can be anywhere from 120 to 140 active geocaches at any given time, tucked along its popular perimeter or more remote interior trails. Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) created a Centennial GeoTour featuring 100 geocaches across multiple state parks – while the challenge is finishing up, many of the treasures still remain. A new DNR geocaching challenge will kick off in spring 2025 in partnership with Michigan Geocaching Organization.
While on your geocaching journey, you might learn about the community around Adventure Lab® which takes this pastime to a new level. Created by the team at Geocaching HQ, the concept is similar to traditional geocaching, but the caches aren’t necessarily physical containers — they’re experiences that can take you anywhere within GPS range as you chase after foodie, cultural or outdoor activities. In Michigan, those moments can take you to the charming urban fairy doors of Ann Arbor, to military sites, historical districts and Michigan’s famous lighthouses.
Ready to get started? Just download the Geocaching® or Adventure Lab® and turn on your tracking. The treasures are already waiting for you.
