Peak Color for October 28-November 4, 2022
The curtain is falling on another Pure Michigan’s fall color show. What a spectacular fall we've had this year in Pure Michigan! Magnificent colors lit up our forests, trails, hills, parks, golf courses, shorelines and backyards. But there's still more to experience before the season's end.

For fans of Michigan’s annual fall color spectacle, this weekend will be the final opportunity to indulge their penchant for leaf peeping. Peak color has ended across most of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but audiences still have a chance to catch a few dazzling trailers across the region this coming weekend.
Take in a leisurely bike ride or drive, tour an intriguing museum or cultural attraction, or unwind and take advantage of a relaxing fall getaway.
Taste fall—crunch into a crisp Michigan apple, indulge in a lush pear or savor the taste of an award-winning cider. Experience the fun of picking out the perfect pumpkin. Share smiles and family time. So pack the car, the kids, the dog and spend a weekend sharing the taste of fall at a local farmers market or cider mill.
Michigan's wine, beer and spirit trails lead us to hand-crafted pours that excite the senses. So uncork the bottle, grab a growler and take a sip along one of Michigan’s many spirited trails.
Upper Peninsula
Most of the region is past peak color, and the majority of the leaves have fallen to the forest floor. Although the area is past peak, there’s still color to be found and activities the enjoy in the region. If you make your way to the southern end of Marquette County on the weekend, you will see forests of bright orange tamarack trees. Stop at The UP North Lodge in Gwinn and enjoy a great meal and drink.
Although the Keweenaw Peninsula is past peak, there’s a lot of fall foliage still hanging on. The area has experienced nice late-season weather, including a few 70-degree days! There are several fun Halloween events planned for this coming weekend, and the weather forecast looks great. Enjoy a Haunted Mine Tour, pick out the perfect pumpkin at a local pumpkin patch, or enjoy Halloween activities in downtown Calumet. You’ll find more area information and things to do at visitkeweenaw.com.
While the area‘s peak has passed, there are still beautiful colors in Dickinson County. Many spots are showcasing brilliant oaks, and the tamaracks are in their bright gold. A drive through the country or the woods still offers the beauty of fall, even if most of that color on the forest floor.
Lower Peninsula
Along the many trails and waterways surrounding Indian River's color corridor, the majestic peak has passed. Yet, those who wish to glimpse some last-minute colors are still in luck. Not only is the shimmering gold of the tamaracks beginning to arrive—dotted amongst the darker and more earthy rusts—late color blooming oak, aspen, birch and more are throwing beautiful reds, yellows, crimsons and creams here and there.
Locals recommend visitors explore along the Pigeon and Sturgeon rivers and low-lying lands surrounding Burt and Mullet lakes to glimpse the luminous tamarack gold cast against the stoic greens of pine, spruce and cedar. Along the way, you can still catch some last-minute splash from maples, birch, beech and oak in the area.
Be sure to grab binoculars before heading out. While some birds head south for winter, some call the woods and open waters of northern Michigan their winter home. Ducks like the canvasback, goldeneye and long-tailed, along with northern finches, are beginning to arrive for the winter. This is also the perfect time to catch longspurs snow buntings in large numbers.
Although peak has passed for northwest Michigan, Traverse City still has stunning color along the shoreline. While most of the inland has predominately bronze hues, visitors will still see some interior areas ablaze brilliant color.
Experience the fabulous fall weather and scenery throughout Michigan's Great Lakes Bay Region while the aera is displaying best color of the year. Whether you pick Bay, Midland or Saginaw County, you'll be treated to colorful vistas driving along local streets, major highways or backroads. For the best of fall color, walk along the area's extensive Great Lakes Bay Regional Trails. You will be surrounded by colorful leaves, gentle waters and migrating wildlife along the Bay City Area Riverwalk/Railtrail, The Tridge on the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, and the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail. Be sure to enjoy the tastes and flavors of fall at local farms, cider mills and markets.
Autumn hues are in their glory and at peak this week in southwest Michigan! Take a trip along the Southwestern Michigan Makers Trail as you meander the beautiful countryside.
Ann Arbor’s peak colors are nearing sunset for another year, but visitors can still find some vibrant yellows, oranges, purples and reds hanging on. Ann Arbor is nicknamed “Tree Town” for a reason. The area is filled with dense woodlands and tree-lined streets, and is also home to 150+ parks in the area. But there’s more to fall in Ann Arbor than its stunning foliage. Don’t let the season slip away before you experience fall colors abound in tree town.
