Microadventures in Michigan
You don’t need weeks of planning to make memories in Michigan, and you certainly don't need to take a week off to experience the joy of exploring. A microadventure is a spontaneous, pocket-sized adventure – easy to fit into a free afternoon, a lazy Sunday or a rare weekend without plans.
With miles of Great Lakes shoreline, breathtaking landscapes, urban delights and adventure just a couple hours from anywhere, Michigan makes it easy to trade your routine for a slice of wonder.
Ann Arbor
Tubing on the Huron River
Rent a tube from a local outfitter like Argo Canoe Livery in downtown Ann Arbor and spend the afternoon floating the Huron River. Drift through sun-dappled woods and past riverside parks on this gentle float.
Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum
Wander through a native Michigan wildflower garden, mature woodlands and wetlands, past ponds buzzing with dragonflies, and then pop into a conservatory featuring tropical, warm-temperature and desert plants at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Make a day of it with a short drive to the Nichols Arboretum, featuring miles of trails bouncing from panoramic views to deep valleys and lush glens.
Hunt for Fairy Doors
Scattered throughout downtown Ann Arbor are a series of tiny, handcrafted Urban Fairy Doors. Hidden along storefronts, these fairy doors started as a local art project and are now a citywide treasure hunt. Bring your kids or embrace your inner 8-year-old as you search for these magical fairy homes.
Detroit
Dequindre Cut
Connecting the Detroit Riverfront to the Eastern Market, the Dequindre Cut is a 2-mile greenway home to a stunning gallery of urban artwork and graffiti. Walk it, bike it or stop at the Freight Yard, an outdoor beer and wine garden stretching across nine repurposed shipping containers.
Sterling State Park in Monroe
Sterling State Park is Michigan’s only state park on Lake Erie. About an hour south of Detroit in Monroe, the park is home to a soft sandy beach. Its diverse mixture of marsh and woodland makes it an excellent destination for birding. Full-amenity cottages and a modern campground mean you can make a weekend of it.
Belle Isle Aquarium
Belle Isle Aquarium, the oldest aquarium in America, sits in one of Michigan’s best urban parks, Belle Isle Park. The aquarium holds a collection of freshwater fish from the Great Lakes and beyond, in addition to a burst of colorful saltwater fish and coral.
Grand Rapids
Blandford Nature Center
A short drive from Grand Rapids, Blandford Nature Center’s trails lead into forests, alongside streams, and through meadows and wetlands. If you’d like to get even closer to nature, the excellent wildlife rehabilitation program offers the chance to meet rescued and rehabilitated hawks, falcons, owls, and more.
Kayaking from Millennium Park
Paddle the Grand River from Millennium Park and soak up the sun. The DeVos Family Boathouse offers rentals of kayaks, paddle boats, canoes, and rowboats. The stretch of river is calm enough for beginners but scenic enough to keep things interesting.
Grand Rapids Public Museum
The Grand Rapids Public Museum’s permanent collections cover West Michigan’s natural history and cultural heritage, but a revolving door of traveling exhibits means there’s always something new to see. The Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium also offers the chance to visit faraway constellations and galaxies, or to get a closer look at the beauty of our own solar system.
Lansing
Hawk Island County Park
Hawk Island County Park offers a spring-fed lake with a swimming area, a splash pad, disc golf and threads of wooded trails – all within Lansing proper.
Woldumar Nature Center
Five miles of trails run through forests, meadows and along the Grand River at Woldumar Nature Center. Minutes from downtown Lansing, the nature center also features educational programs and displays on local geology and live animals.
Catch a Lansing Lugnuts Game
Minor league baseball with the Lansing Lugnuts at Jackson Field is one of the best-value nights in mid-Michigan. Cheap tickets, good food and the kind of easygoing atmosphere mean that watching the game is secondary to kicking back and relaxing.
Marquette
Presque Isle Park
Presque Isle Park’s 323-acre peninsula juts into Lake Superior on Marquette’s north side, with rocky shorelines, old-growth forests and views you won’t forget. Hike miles of trails or bike along the outer edge of the peninsula – but whatever you do, plan to be at Sunset Point in time to catch one of the most scenic sunsets Michigan has to offer.
Yellow Dog Falls
A short drive from Marquette and a wooded hike lead to one of the Upper Peninsula’s most enchanting waterfalls, Yellow Dog Falls. Bordered by hardwoods and mixed conifers, the falls are not only stunning but are also a swimming spot in the summer.
Marquette Maritime Museum
Learn about the shipwrecks, lighthouses and commercial fishing history that shaped the Lake Superior coast at the Marquette Maritime Museum. The museum is small enough to explore in an hour, but the stories stay with you.
Traverse City
Bike the TART Trail
The Traverse Area Recreation Trail (TART Trail) stretches over 60 miles through cherry orchards, lakeshore and small towns. You don’t have to ride the whole thing – just pick a stretch, pack a snack and enjoy the kind of scenery that made northern Michigan famous.
Paddle the Leland River
In tiny Leland, you can kayak or paddleboard the Leland River, a short, gentle river that empties into Lake Michigan right next to historic Fishtown. It’s a postcard-perfect paddle, short enough for beginners and beautiful enough for everyone, with plenty of wineries and restaurants awaiting you after your adventure.
Drive M-22 to Suttons Bay
One of Michigan’s most scenic drives winds along the Leelanau Peninsula through vineyards, lakeside bluffs and small towns. Make the drive your own with a stop at some of the locally owned shops, restaurants and wineries.
